Idles rough..why?

whats wrong with my car?..while idling the car shakes alilttle, when it is in gear and calms down in park or neutral, also after cruising and stopping at a stop light i can smell either gas/smoke coming in my car, if i leave the windows open. My car is idling at 6-700 in neutral/park and 500 in drive.
I cleaned the points on the distributer and cap, new spark plugs and wires, good alternator, and im checking the timing timing tomorow..also i found out my ac/heater fan doesnt work and my a/c compressor doesnt kick in when i turn it on is this associated with the problem??.if u have some info on this please post

btw its a 84 transam 305 auto

Check teh timing. Clean the carb. Check the TPS voltage (should be 0.48VDC). Check the MC solenoid operation. Make sure the oxygen sensor is generating a signal. Scan for error codes.
