Knocking sound... ARGH!
Knocking sound... ARGH!
Just got a '85 TA and noticed when you start it up from being cold there is a knocking sound.. car only has 63k on it.. almost sounds like its comeing from the transmission tunnel though.. quits after about 15sec or so... speeds up if I give it gas, and doesn't do it when its already warm... please tell me its not a rod knocking, I think I'll cry....
Hey EdE! I'm not gonna tell him, are you? EdE "I'm not telling. How about you, Karp?" Karp"I'm not telling him. Hey, let's get Mikey. He'll tell him anything."
Hey, Mikey!

Alright, I'll bite. This may be a stupid question ( I thought there were none), but my Formula has had a small knocking sound (almost sounds like the old heat risers) for at least three years. It has nearly 200k, and it only does it when it is cold. Is this a rod knock? I thought it first it was, and waited for the inevitable, but has not happened. I got the car when it had about 95k, and noticed it soon after. I have had it since '95.

HDTRIPP: What you are talking about is PISTON SLAP....the piston wobbles in the bore until it expands & quiets down....4th gen LT1's are noted for this.
Alan 84TA: I had a Monte Carlo that had a rod knock....it knocked ALL the time. You may have worn main bearings...when you start it, there is insufficient oil pressure to "Cushion" the crank/bearing surface.....A friend of mine has used SLICK 50 on two different occassions & swears that he no longer heard the knocking upon startup......I do not believe in the "Engine rebuild Kit in a bottle B.S...but with your low mileage, I'd give it a try.
Good luck,
Roy
