where can i find a 305 crankshaft???
I ahve looked all over the place and i have not been able to find a 305 crankshaft. I can find the 350 crank everywhere, but i cannot seem to find any aftermarket manufactures for the 305, or for at leasta reground 305 crank. I need one fast and cheap, the only places i have found thus far that carry one for me would be straight from GM and Advance auto, but we dont even wanna mention the price from GM and Advance wants $215, there has to be somewhere to get one cheaper isnt there? help guys, this car need to be rebuilt asap, this is my buddies daily driver

1 piece or 2 piece rms? you could probably get one cheap from a local junkyard and have it machined..

A 350 crank will do fine.
You're going to have to have everything balanced anyway. A 350 crank can easily be balanced for 305 rods and pistons.
Have you tried www.enginekits.com?

i can buy a brand new 350 crank made by SCAT from norther auto parts for about $160, so all i woudl need is a 350 harmonic balancer if i decided to go with that route? If thats the case i woudl def go that way and have a brand new stronger crank. A few guys have told me that i would have a hell of a vibration if i used a 350 crank, let me know guys, thanks
i looked on numerous engine rebuilder sites, including the powerhouse and i cant find a stock 305 crankshaft, they list damn near every other crank known to man, but not the 305, my buddy whose engine this is has no knowledge at all about engines, and i have done a few 350 rebuilds and they are no big deal, but i have never seen such a huge pain in the a** to find a 305 crank, i agree though 305 has to be one of the most common engines on the road, i know its not really a performance engine, but still, come on some company has to sell a decent new crank

A 305 crank IS a 350 with some weight taken off. The pistons for the 305 are smaller therefore lighter than 350 pistons. The rods were made lighter also. In order to balance the rotating mass to the recipricating mass, the throws on the crankshaft had to be made lighter.
To do this, they just remove more material from the throws of a 350 crank.
Go here ---> http://www.mortec.com/cranks.htm
Notice there's not one casting number for a 305 crank by itself. There's no such animal. ALL 305 cranks are 350 cranks that went to Jenny Craig.
OK, so if i buy a 350 crank where can i take it to get rebalanced, and any ideas how much this might cost? Do i need to take the entire engine somewhere, or could i just tell the place that its going to go into a 305 and they would balance it to those specs? I ahve no idea, i have never had to deal with the 305 before.

I don't know where there's a shop that would balance your rotating assembly. Try the yellow pages. Call a machine shop.
They'll need everything that attaches to the crank. Pistons, rods, rings, and if it's a 1 pc rear main seal crank, they'll need the flexplate/flywheel also.
All the rods need to be the same weight. All the pistons also. If they aren't, the machine shop will make them. Then they simulate that weight on the crankshaft (called 'bob weight') and spin it. From there they remove material on the crank until the balance machine says it's all balanced.
A lot of people will tell you it doesn't "need" to be done. That's true, but if your friend wants his engine to operate well past 25K miles, then he needs to have it done.

Thanks AJ, i think our best bet will be to find him a 305 crank somewhere, like i said this is his daily driver, so i know it has to be reliable, and i think the 350 crank is just going to end up being more work and more money than it will be to buy a 305 crank somewhere anyways, thakls for being straight up with me though and having no bs, i appreciate it, the last thing we woudl wanna do is rebuild this thing and find out in a couple years its needs another rebuild

easiest way would be to just find a machine shop and get a crank from them and get whatever machining done there also. For sure they'll already have some for you anyway.

The best choices: turn the damaged crank, if possible; buy a used one at the junkyard and get it turned; or buy a crank kit, from somebody like Standard Crankshaft www.standardcrankshaft.com

OK.. you're not understanding what I'm saying.
ANYTIME you get a new crank, and use rods that weren't originally on it from the factory (regardless if it's a 305, 350, 400, or whatever) YOU HAVE TO HAVE IT BALANCED if you want it to last.
It HAS to be done. There's no way around it.

Just go to any autoparts store. You should be able to get a 10/10 305 crank cheaply. I paid around $125 for my 10/10 350 crank, and they had plenty of 305 cranks in stock.

i agree with all of you guys, if it were my car i personally would scrap the 305 in favor of at least a 350, but its not my car, and i have been trying to get my buddy to do that upgrade for quite awhile, and now would be perfect timing, but he likes his 305, the car is a 91 formula 5sd, its a gorgeous car, near mint, and i guess he really just wants to keep it having the original drivetrain with just bolt ons. He uses the car as his daily driver during the summer and isnt really into racing, or 1/4 times, he just likes the fair power, nice handling, and looks of the car, i guess not all of us are power ******
So thats the explanation, still doesnt make complete sense to me, but its his car and all i'm doing is helping him dot he rebuild. Thanks to all of you guys who have helped out, i have found a few 305 cranks now, and a couple guys have also sent me messages about having used cranks, still if anyone can find me a decent 305 crank for an 87-95 305, new or used in good shape, let me know, once again thanks alot guys
