vaccuum leaks?
I've checked everything I can think of... line to brake booster, pcv line, egr blockoff.... what could cause a vaccuum leak otherwise? at least that's what I think it is, I can't get the motor started.. I have fuel and spark, everyonce in a while i'll get a little backfire thru the carb.... I just don't know what to do ;x

Then it's not put back in right.
Get that taken care of first. Until then, vacuum leaks won't matter.
Might be a good idea not to let that particular buddy touch your car, if he doesn't even know how to put a distributor back in the right way. That's pretty basic to building a motor. If he can't even do that, who knows what else he might screw up in the process of building or otherwise working on a motor, or how many he might have already screwed up.
