Help! My A/C's always on!

The clutch will not disengage. Is this a relay or a vacuum line? No wonder I've been running a 10.23 in the 1/8th. I know I can just unhook it, but I want it fixed; in Texas we need our air conditioners every once in a while.... The switches for the defroster/vents work fine, they just always blow cold air. This is in my Flame Red '89 GTA 5.7L TPI with Hypertech chip, fan switch, and 160 thermostat. Yes, I have an aftermarket stereo, no, that's not the problem.

On an unrelated note... a (drunk) friend of mine mentioned a correlation between lazy headlights and the vacuum lines under the dash if you've replaced the stereo. Anyone know what the hell he was talking about?

Thanks,
MandyLee

A/C compressor turning on (controls on the dash) is all electrical- the 2-wire connector that plugs in at the front of the compressor near the clutch assembly. After that the various pressure switches in the system should tell it when to turn on and off so it doesn't umm......... overcompress. An A/C tech I'm not. If you unplug the connector at the compressor and it still runs then it's just a locked clutch and it's time to replace. If you unplug it and it stops then you've got an electrical problem somewhere- possibly in that new dash unit you installed. You'd need to know the wiring to start diagnosing it and I can't really help you with that.

As for the headlights, they're all electrical on a 3rd gen. The pop-up lights on a Firebird/Trans Am are two electrical motors that spin to raise and lower the lights. They're either getting enough voltage to raise and lower or they're not. Can't imagine how a vacuum line problem could affect them.
