305 TPI getting new cam
my car needs a new cam and lifters. i wanna go bigger but nothing too radical. i was thinking about getting a crane compucam 2030 kit. Specifications:
* Advertised duration: 264 intake/274 exhaust
* Duration at .050 in.: 204 intake/214 exhaust
* Gross Valve Lift: .423 in. intake/.446 in. exhaust
* Lobe separation: 110 degrees
* RPM range: 1,500 to 4,500
Would this be a good cam to put in my car? I did the 730 SD conversion but other than that everything is stock. Should i go bigger? the prom can be modified if necessary. what are the stock cam specs for the 85 305 tpi engines?

Good luck.. I have been trying to find the best cam for my '85 305TPI for a while now. Unfortunately I haven't had much luck on this site. That cam does seem really mild compared to some of the cams that have been recommended by CompCams. Whatever cam you decide on I don't think you will get a big gain in performance without changing the heads. I will be getting the Torquer 305 heads. I don't have the money for aluminum heads right now. Here are the cams that I have be looking at:
XE249-12 206/212 .434/.444 112 LSA Seems too mild to me.
XE256-14 212/218 .449/.456 112 LSA
XE262-14 218/224 .479/.480 114 LSA
I may be mistaking but isn't the 2030 a hydralic roller cam? The '85 305 is a hydralic flat tappet cam. All of the above cams are hydralic flat tappet cams.

i checked the tech articles and only saw one article that pertained to cam specs. it had nothing to do with 305's or 85 tpi vehicles. which article is it?
i am only replacing it because it is all ****ered up so i don't really want anything really radical. if this motor ever blows up it won't get rebuilt. will be a good excuse for a 350. how well will it idle with a 110 degre LSA? will it be lopey? should i go bigger? if so, what do u recommend? anybody with a 305 that they went with a bigger cam with pretty good results? I'm not set on any specific brand or anything like that. I figured i might as well just go aftermarket rather than order an OEM cam and lifters from GM.
jfreeman, as far as i can see on summit's site, it's not a roller cam. their site could be wrong tho but i know i cannot get a roller cam.

I believe this is what Vader is referring to. https://www.thirdgen.org/newdesign/tech/techdb.shtml
Anyway, the specs for the cam in the 305TPI are:
202/206 .403/.415 114.5 LSA
So as you can see, there isn't that big of a difference between the 2 cams. The 110 LSA is a little too low for an automatic. I wouldn't go below 112 LSA, unless you like the lope. I personally do not.
