the tech article says the wrong size for the belt. if you look at the tensioner after the swap, the belt is way too long.. it puts the tensioner in the totally wrong place...

I am not the only one with the problem.. two other people I know did the belt swap using the belt mentioned in the article and have the same prob.

here are some pic to show what im talking about:

here is what the tensioner looks like when the belt is the correct length. this is on a stock accessory system car with the smog pump and the stock length belt. note the marks on top of the tensioner.

this is what it looks like after the pump has been deleted and the belt replaced with the longer one. the new belt is too long and the tensioner is way too far down..

here is a pic with a farther out shot. you can see that the belt tensioner is not only up and down, its PAST up and down and slightly the other direction.......

now heres what needs to be done... someone needs to find the correct length belt... it needs to be slightly shorter, but I dont know how much... can someone please help me work out what size it needs to be to have the tensioner working correctly? and once we know, we need to update that article...

All you gotta do is get a seamstress tape and bring it around the pulleys and get the measurement then get the belt with the closest size.

Route your belt the other way...from the alternator go to the power steering, then to the water pump.

I followed the article and the 96.8" belt works perfect.

BTW, is your power steering bypassed? It's hard to tell in the last pic.

Yes. Either your belt is routed totally wrong, or you don't have power steering.

I think what you did was use the recommended length belt but not the recommended routing. The specified length was for routing it around the PS pump. If you are going to route it like you have it, you need a way shorter belt. I know that it showed that diagram which is very misleading because you'd be under the impression that either routing will work, but apparently it will not.
