Could the tps cause these problems?
Could the tps cause these problems?
Ok, well I have been strugling with a q jet we rebuild recently. I just got into it again and believe I have everything set right, but it wants to run rich no matter what. I have tried adjusting all kinds of stuff to even extreems to see if it would cure the rich condition. It seems like no matter what I do the computer tries to compensate and make its self rich. It get rich enough to smoke if you blip the throttle. The think that makes me doubt this is that the black smoke doesnt seem to stay if you just hold it up at rpm. However it doesnt take much throttle to keep the rpms at 2000 if not under load so I guess it is possible that it could just be slightly above that that it gets to where it thinks its wot.
The second thing that is leading me to believe this is that I have also noticed that my torque converter is not locking up. I know that this started around the same time as the problem with the carb but dont know if it was exactly the same time. If it thinks I am at too high of throttle it will not lock up correct? Does this seem to make since.
Well, I have a practically new tps in another carb I have laying around. Do you think that it is probable for this to be my problem. If so I will probably swap it out and see tomorrow. Does anyone know which wires I would need to test on the tps and what range they need to be in?

I have similar condition with my V6 recently rebuilt for me. I got my scanner and turned the torx accelerator/regulator screw reading from 2300 RPMs to 600. But the volts were: 2.0....1.8....1.6.....1.4.....1.2.........................................PUM!...0.4. There a bad range in the TPS I think. (The next weekend I 'll recheck).

Sounds more like the plugs in the bottom of the fuel bowl under the primary metering wells are leaking, as usual. Did you sand or wire-brush them and epoxy them over?
I cleaned mine up and epoxied them. It doesnt seem to be to rich at idle, but more when I "blip" the throttle it will blow a puff of black smoke. I can hold it at say 2000 rpm and its not smoking but if I rev it from there it smokes. It can be a light amount of throttle so I am not thinking it is the secondaries. I reset the tps and still no lockup so I tried another tps that I had that hadnt hardly been used and still no lock up. I dont know if it is still smoking or not. It seems to be running decent but I need another person to check and see if it is still puffing smoke.
