Need new engine ideas

Okay, the TBI 305 is dying in my 91 RS. I want a new engine and don't want to rebuild the 305. I have two problems, NJ emmisions testing and budget. I'm on a tight budget and am going to have to cut corners somewhere. The car is ready for a 350+ engine so I was looking at the 330hp 350 from sdpc2000 since it's only $2100 flat no shipping or tax. My problem now is intake and passing emmisions. I still have the smog pump, SLP headers w/AIR, and A CAT. I would like to have a carb because of cost erformance ration. Back the the emmisions though, what would I need to do to pass? Will I pass with the cam that comes with the engine or will I need to change the cam and go EFI? Please I need a lot of ideas and experienced peeps opinions. Thanks and post any ideas. Oh yeah, I'd like to make that 330hp no less unless it's impossible.

Well that engine already has a pretty decent cam in it. I'd stay with that cam. It's got Vortec heads so that kinda limits your induction choices to TBI or Carb. I'd get a carb with an Edelbrock vortec intake. Get some good headers behind it and I'm sure you'll be in the 330HP range... no doubt about it. As far as emissions, it depends on your state. You might want to keep the TBI if they're **** about checking things under the hood. Even with TBI, that engine will make lots more power than your 305. You would also benefit from a custom chip.

JPrevost,

I would put the crate motor in with a carb and intake that will support EGR, and whatever your emmissions will check for. Then, have fun with it!!!

When emmissions approaches, bolt back on the TBI w/stock chip. It won't run too well, but you just want to pass emmissions, right? then , next day, pull TBI and out carb back on. Noone will be the wiser...
