does the ticking get faster or louder at faster speeds? or faster or louder at higher RPM's? or does it stay constant? Have any battery charging problems? Does it do it at idle, if so, try pinpointing the sound to 1 area. Really dont have too many idea's from what you said sorry, alot of stuff can click, try driving it a bit and making it click and see if you cant pinpoint it a bit more or get more info i'd say. Unless someone else can help

the noise does get louder with increased speeds but once you get to a steady speed it doesnt do it...i have replaced the alt..and the belt....it is on a 87 iroc and it sounds like it is coming from the drivers side

Could be an exhaust leak from a single cylinder. Do you have headers? Could also be a cracked or loose manifold.

Exaust leak makes sense, but wouldnt that cause the clicking to get faster? Anyway i just remembered, my compressor used to do that. Made me really worried, till my grandfather (mechanic) heard it and checked my AC, since i have a leak and no freon left, the compressor clicks in and out kinda fast, but that was mostly at startup, it would get louder when i went faster, but usually once i got moving it went away.

I think it's exhaust, too. Yeah, ticking will get faster but it's rather hard to discern. Just look for a leak or for header/manifold cracks.
