HOw good can I make the rebuild...what are my alternatives?? Who makes a good rebuild kit, and what does it usually run for?? Thanks...

sure you can do it with out a machine shop if your engine isn't wore too badly. you'll still need to hone the bores and change cam bearings, something most people leave to machine shops. rebuilding the heads would be where you'd really need a machine shop. it's a lot better to do it right than save a few bucks.

yeah, what ede said. If you're looking for a rebuild kit, buy a super chevy or high perf. pontiac. PAW also has some good kits.

I rebuilt MY engine in my garage with no trips to the machine shop. I bought TWO cases of carb&choke cleaner (24 cans) and went to town on the block. It came out sqeeeky clean. LOL Sprayed it with WD 40... Honed it and started the assembly process with new bearings, oil pump and rings. Put it toghether with new gaskets and with my rebuilt heads on top. It runs GREAT and the oil is still VERY clear after I put about 300 miles on it

Why would you wash your block with carb cleaner, man? All you need to use is Palmolive and some very stiff bristle brushes and a garden hose... Works well and fast! Then dry it fast using compressed air to get the oil passages dry and spray down w/oil/WD40/etc to keep it from rusting...

Oh, if you have 300 miles on it, change the oil and filter...
