A few T/A questions

whats up all, I'm new to this forum as well as the f-body world
I'm picking up a 1985 Trans Am from my uncle, 305 TPI automatic and I was curious on a few things:

What are the stock 1/8 and 1/4 mile times?
And maybe what are a few good starting mods to start off with?
maybe cold air intake, computer chip, exhaust work
any info and input would be greatly appreciated
thanks
jim

Check out the tech articles at this site's homepage. You'll find more than enough info to get you started. Any questions after that, feel free.

Welcome to the boards! You will find asking open ended generic questions won't always get you answers on this board. As stated above just start reading the basic tech articles that will answer alot of the base questions you may have. Just to answer a few quick questions you had. 1/4 Mi. for an 85 305 is right around 16 sec. The first things to start with for performance is a good tuneup. Replace air filter with K&N run new cap, rotor, wires, plugs, oil, filters PCV, and so on then search free mods on this sight. These are little tips that can improve the cars performance without spending cash.

OK so on brand new perfectly tuned cars the 305's ran mid 15's and maybe an occasional low 15 on a perfect run and that was probably with the hottest camaro/TA offered in 85 with the best gearing. Now 18yrs of abuse later on a stock motor you'll be lucky to turn 16's. Now you clean it up put some work into it with new tune up parts and a few upgrades you can get back to the low to mid 15's. Now I'll wait for all the 305 owner responses out there to tell me about how yours runs something faster than this. I am just trying to be realistic with the guy.
