i hate it have the worst luck in the world!

well as u all know some lady destroyed my car, so i have a z28 now that i am trying so hard to get on the road again but no matter what i fix something else brakes. k here is my list> first fixed a fuel leak, then i changed my plugs and wires, then starter, then altinator, then my rad along with the hose, then a belt, then plugs again! (champion sucks) then i got a new accelerator pump for my carb, sure enough it needed a whole rebuild, so i got it all rebuild, oh and i am not even gunna start on the body and interior work i did. now today i find that the flippin fly wheel is missing some teeth and 5 out of 10 times when i start it it grinds really bad. and the messed up part is i got no car now because the old hag and i am stuck bussin it around for parts and work and so on.
so i am back here again asking another question, how hard is it to fix a fly wheel? and how do i find out what tranny i have?
sry for the bitc^n people had to let it out....

well first off lets clear things up.. is your car automatic or manual? is its manual it has a flywheel, if its automatic it has a flexplate. both are fairly easy to replace but somewhat time consuming. what year is the car? what engine does it have? if its auto its most likely a 700r4.. does it have an overdrive? if it does my money is on the 700 unless someone did a swap.. if its a 5 speed manual its more than likely a t-5.. lets assume its an automatic.... remove inspection cover, unbolt the flexplate to torque converter bolts, unbolt the tranny bellhousing from the block, remove the starter, remove the driveshaft and torque arm, disconnect the trans cooler lines, disconnect the tv cable (not completely nessicary depending on how far you move the trans) also you may have to remove the dipstick/filler tube, put a rolling jack under it, unbolt the cross member, slide the tranny out of the way, unbolt the flex plate, remove it, bolt new flex plate on, reassemble. (may also need to unhook/remove speedo cable and the shift linkage depending on how far your moving it)

AJ,

Good reference photo, but the "4L80E" pan doesn't show the factory-installed oil drain plug, like I have seen on so many of them. Is that a graphically-geneated photo or just an old one.

I dunno. I got if from Cheby Hi Performants.

Did you want me to email them and complain, or do want the liberty? :lala:

I just have bad luck with transmissions actually, just one that's out of the car right now for good Bought it as a core for 100 bucks, stock tranny blew 2 weeks later, rebuilt the TH400, bought the spohn stuff for the conversion, got it all running, 2 weeks later the Th400 fries, 2 months later the tranny is back in the car, a day later same prob but didn't fry it. Some little stuff in between then and last week, but now it's fried again! reverse is gone and 3rd is gone. It only worked good for about 4 months out of the 6 I've been driving it.
Just got done taking it out of the car about 30 minutes ago, but! Sitting on the floor is a 3,800 dollar transmission I'm sticking in Got an awesome deal on it so I didn't have to pay anywhere close to the list price and I know it's good.

somebody mention bad luck with transmissions? I've put somewhere under 14k miles on my car since I bought it. In that time, I've replaced the pump, tv cable, governor, shift linkage that goes into the trans, then the whole trans. Transmission #2 was worst than the first, so I did a T5 swap (Transmission #3). One of the dog-ears on the T5 was busted off, then after i finished getting that welded, I put it in to find there was no 2nd gear.

Transmission #4 seems to work well, although I spent 2 months tracking down a vibration.

4 transmissions within 14k miles on a car that has a best-to-date timeslip of 16.1. Not bad for a heavily modified Tuned Port 350, eh?

Hehe ouch... Looks like I'll be going to the track on the 19th to finally get some times Dang thing better make it LOL I have no clue what the converter will stall at or if I'll even have my driveshaft back in time to make the drive. All I'm hoping for is that the vibration at 80 mph is gone after I get it back.

For the guy who is swapping his flexplate, inspect your starter gear as well. Not much worst than replacing the flexplate and destroying the new one because your starter has a bad gear.
