clunk noise

Every time I change gears from park to drive or reverse I hear a big clunking sound comming from the rear of the car. I have changed my transmission mount and my u joints neither of whitch were worn out. How much play should be in the rear end. Mine turns about 1/2 inch before it encounters any restance. Any help would be great.

if your turning the yolk on the rear, there really shouldnt be much, if any play at all. The only place youll find any play is maybe if your turning one of the wheels. There will be some play in the spider gears in the diff carrier. Sounds like something may be wrong if your rear has that much play in it.
