Mount supposed to look like this?

1990 with a 305 TPI and automatic. Just curious if this is how the transmission mount is supposed to look? I'm getting a loud clunk when putting it into gear. I wasn't sure if that hole was always there or if it was a solid mount that is separating. Thanks.

looks pretty toasted

Put the brake on with the engine running with the hood up. Have a friend watch the motor when you put it in gear. If rear of motor rises up, it's the mount. That will cause a clunk at the tranny tunnel

If you need a new trans mount, most of the aftermarket rubber ones are junk, and the poly ones are hard as rock... I found one at Napa, see pic, far right, very good!

Also check toque arm mount... that one, I would switch for a poly, but you need to see which direction it's stamped (can be one of 2)...

Usually it's one of those 2 things...

Its hard to tell from the pic. You need to get under the car and push up on the trans tailshaft to see if the mount has seperated..

Re: Mount supposed to look like this?

The rubber tears away from the metal holding it. That's why a mount can look ok until you lift the trans a little.
