Camshaft Questions????
Camshaft Questions????
I have a 87 Trans Am with a 350 TPI 5-spd. I just installed the 350 and used a Compcam 08-300-8 duration at .050 I:206 E:210 with a lift of .480 Intake .510 Exhaust with the 1.6 rockers. I bought it for my 305 TPI and used it in that car for 300 Miles before the bottom end went out. I was looking in the Gm Performance Catalog and found a couple of cams and wonder if it would make a difference in HP. The first is with duration at .050 I:235 E:235 lisf with 1.6 rockers I:.510 E:.510 lobe centerline 114 the second is p/n 12370846 duration at .050 I:222 E:230 lift with 1.6 rockers I:.540 E:.560 lobe centerine 112. I am already planning on getting a custom computer chip for the car. Would either of these cams work?

Unless you have alot of head work or aftermarket heads, and a aftermarket or heavily ported stock TPI setup you will not benefit from more cam. The cam you have is a little soft on the duration but is pretty nice w/ those 1.6 rockers lift-wise actually IMO. Not a bad cam for a mild TPI engine.
The 222/230 degree cam would work alright w/ some mild work to the heads and intake, but the 235/235 cam is too long in the duration for your typical long tubed TPI setup IMO.
I assume you have a good exhaust w/ headers, etc. If not then that also should come before you monkey w/ the cam anymore.

I have cast iron L98 heads from a 92 350 TPI. I had them ported polished, dual springs, and screw in studs. The intake has a mild port job with SLP runners. I have a exhaust system but I have not installed headers Yet. I put my stock manifolds back on. I am planning on installing headers when I tear it back down.
