(easy) questions on changing rear end ratios

Just curious, but apart from buying the ring & pinion, and fluids, what else would I need to buy if I wanted to change gear ratios? I checked Thunder Racing and Summit, and they all have "kits" that include a lot of things which I'm not sure that I need.

Also, I was told that if I'm changing gears, I don't need to check for backlash because all I'd have to do is reuse the shims. How true is that? How long should the entire job take?

thanks

You'll need the kit. I'm quite sure you'll need practically every piece that comes in one.

You absolutely do have to check the backlash, and you will probably need different shims than whatever is in there now, because the odds are very slim that your new gears will line up to exactly the same spot as your other ones did.

Sounds like you need to make sure that the person who told you all this, isn't around when these gears are being installed.

I can do a set of gears in about 4 hours; I'm pretty slow. But I've done a few. If the rear is out of the car, figure on 6 hours.
