Wanna read some really dumb questions??

Yah, I've already established that it's dumb that I don't know this already. But what is a MAF sensor? I'm thinking it's the mass airflow thing that I see hooked up in there. What is the purpose of this thing? Also, how do you 'gut' something like that and what would that do to it? Like I said, I know it's dumb.......

AcSeb,

You are correct. The M*** Air Flow sensor does just what it sounds like the name implies. It measures the amount of air entering the engine based on the actual mass or weight of the air. Since the mass of the air can change with temperature, humidity, altitude, etc., this is the most accurate means of determining actual intake air flow. The ECM uses this data to calculate the precise amount of fuel to deliver with each injector pulse. Unfortunately, it's also the most expensive way to measure incoming air flow.

As far as "gutting" a MAF, this is the process of removing the inlet and discharge end screens and machining or sawing out the heat sink fins located inside the MAF housing in the hope of improving intake air flow. Since your engine is a 2.8L displacement, there will be no benefit realized by removing these items, and you risk damage to the sensor in doing so. The majority of people with 350 CID engines get no real benefit from removing the screens and fins, and 305s rarely see a benefit from this procedure, so your slightly smaller MAF should pose no intake restriction to the 2.8L V-6 in your car.

If you're curious about the possible problems associated with doing this "modification", search the archives under "Code 34" or "Oh, **** I think my MAF is toast!"
