CLUNKING IN REAR END!

Hey guys, I just had a carrier 3 posi unit and carrier 3 GM Motive 3:42 Gears installed with my rear end. Well I get the car back and now my rear end is clunking big time! I bought the posi additive and they put that in my posi so I don't know what it could be! It happens in reverse, when I turn, come to a complete stop and when I am sometimes going off the line. I am in the process of breaking in my gears as we speak. Have about 20-30 miles left. I called the rear end shop (which is well known where I live) and he told me that the posi additive just has to work its way into the posi unit. He told me to do a bunch of 360 circles slowly in one direction and then in the other direction. I have been doing that today and so far no difference. What happened and what should i do?

Try doing about 10 figure 8's in an empty parking lot. If it still does it after that, either change the lube (try synthetic this time - guess my favorite), or take it back to the shop to have them check it out. Others have said an extra treatment of friction modifier did the trick.

Hey they got a warranty, you called 'em let 'em know what was going on. If you blow the gears and/or the posi system they have to pay so knock yourself out! (just don't pop the clutch or something that will obviously blow the gears). Worst case you get stuck and they eat the towing. Just call them again and make sure that they don't want to take a quick look.

Thanks but I already paid for the gears and posi (used) so no warrenty. I they might be right but it should have been broken in by now. I will try doing the figure 8 thing and 360 thing again tommorow. They said if it still does it then to bring it in Monday. U think that this is it? That the additive just hasn't gotten into the posi unit?

I personally don't have the seires 3 carrier, but I had t odo my gears 2x. (Long story) They didn't clunk until they were dead. The second time they went, somehow the rinb bolts loosened up (although locktite, was used, and the bolts partially mushroomed, and were torqued properly......) and the pinion gear came loose, moved probably 300 thousanths out of tolerance. Ripped the top half of the gear right off (and these were richmonds) That thing when it went sounded like a point blank gunshot, followed by loud clunking w/ every turn of the driveshaft. The time before it didn't make quite as much nosie when they went. Either way though, on a series 2 carrier, I have never heard of posi fluid not makinng its way in. I don't know about the series 3 though. Sucks about having no warranty...I know how expensive the gears and carrier are.
Good luck

Hey thanks Corey. I was wondering, I never heard of a carrier 2 posi unit?

Mines a series 2 carrier. Has Posi. I checked, it's a GM series 2 carrier. It's not the auburn rear. 7.625/7.5" ring gear. 35 ft/lbs of torque is required to spin one tire, and not the other.
Let me know how it works out. Just because I haven't hear of having to work in the posi lube.
