can you repair a/c compressor yourself

ok, i have a ac compressor, still unsure if it is bad or ok. I had it on once and i guess it locked up and the belt was moving on the clutch but the clutch wasn't spinning. So smoke was redily coming from the belt rubbing the clutch. no the AC compressor has not ceased because i can spin it with my hands. So what does that sound like, the cluth or compressor?

Next is there anyway to fix either or them myself? I have my step-father's mechanic tools, because he used to manage a repair shop for this stuff, but he is gone for 6 months, so i can fix it if there is a way. So is there a way or should i just put the belt back on?
