Best bet is to call shops in your area, labor rates vary so much across the country.

Mike is absolutely correct. Rates will vary widely across regions, and even from shop to shop.

Rates can vary even within the same shop. I usually get to know the guys in the shop a little. I usually use the shop entrance, and speak directly with the machinists. I try to bring in clean parts that are stripped so that they don't have a lot of tedious screwing around to do. Highlighting the areas to be worked with DyKem also helps avoid questions. I generally tell them to take their time, and use it as fill-in work if necessary, then ask tehm to call me if there are any questions or when it's finished.

I've found that they get done in about the same amount of time, with usually a little more care taken, and at a reduced cost. It also has helped to pick up the parts at the shop entrance instead of the front desk, then ask the machinist who I should pay or to whom the check should be written. When the payee on the check isn't the same name as the business, it's amazing how much lower the rates can be.
