Have electric fan probs....HELP!!

It won't run at all, even with a new temp sensor (side of block). BUT - if I ground the wire that goes to the sensor, the fan will run whenever the ignition switch is in the "on" position. Does anyone have a diagram for this circuit, or know of anything I should check to fix this? I think '82-'84 Camaros are not controlled by the ECM like the '85 and later cars were. At least from what I can tell. Is this correct? BTW- my A/C doesn't work yet, so the relay for the A/C wouldn't affect this problem, would it? I have also changed the relay on the firewall with one I got from the junkyard, but it still doesn't turn on automatically. Suggestions? Thanks in advance for any help.

ANYONE?? - certainly I'm not the only guy that has ever had problems with a cooling fan. BTW - I failed to mention it has the E4ME carb on it.

which one of the sending units did you change on the block? is it on the right or left side of the block? the one on the driver's side of the block is to the gauge or light, the one on the passenger side is to the fan switch. If you can ground it out, why not just do it? That fan doesn't run off of a lot of power, and I think that it'll take a lot to blow out that fan motor. Atleast that way you'll be able to drive it around until you do finally fix the problem.

Thanks for the response BurntB. I replaced the fan/temp sensor on the passenger side of the block. It screws into the block just above the knock sensor. From what I understand about the circuit is that when the switch temp gets to around 240 degrees or so, the switch is supposed to ground out the circuit, and cause the fan to turn on. I have checked the connector with a meter, and it seems to be fine. But for some reason, the switch doesn't work when I hook it up, and the onlt way it will work is if I gound the connector that goes to that sensor. The car will run mighty cold here in the winter, so I'd like for it to run as it is sopossed to. Anyone else??

If the fan goes on when you ground the wire then the problem is in the sender or the connection to the sender. The switch simply grounds the wire when the temp is reached. Is it possible that the engine temp didnt reach 240 when you were checking it? I use a tire pyrometer on the thermostat housing to check mine. Also you can get a lower temp sender which is otherwise identical at the parts store.

Thanks for the reply merf. That's EXACTLY how I figured the system worked!! I have checked it up till the engine temp was 260 degrees (near overheating), and the fan wouln't turn on. For some reason, the switch is'nt getting a good ground when the switch closes due to engine temp, but don't know why. What's a "Tire Pyrometer" for? I think I'll try a lower temp switch and see if it will make any difference like you suggested. I just kinda recently rebuilt the engine, and I'm trying to fix this last problem, but so far it's kickin my a** . I think I will also check the engine mounts etc.. to make sure a loose bolt isn't causing this. Thanks for any suggestions...anyone else have any??

UPDATE:
Well, I checked all the grounds to the engine, and all seem to be OK. I then tested it again, and it still won't turn on, and I let the temp. reach 250 degrees. I really don't like to see the engine get that hot after a rebuild, but I want to get this thing to work the right way. Looks like the car will be down for longer than expected. Anyone else know what to try??? If all else fails, I'll have to buy an aftermarket kit from Summit and re-wire the entire system. Has anyone used one of those kits with the adjustable switch?? HELP!!!
