How far should the oil dipstick stick out the other end?

This sounds like a dumb question I know, but I would like to know. My stock dipstick got steped on by a freind, so I got one of these chrome replacement ones for $5 or so. The only thing is now it doesn't have any oil at the end and I can't figure out if it is because the end is too slick and the oil doesn't stick to it so well (no notched grooves at the end) or if it isn't sticking out the other side of the dipstick tub because it is shorter then the stock one was (I didn't compair them... doh!).

If it is the latter, then how far should the dipstick stick out the other end of the tube so it sits in the oil and isn't hitting anything?

stick a bare welding rod, coat hanger, or wire in and see how far it goes before it hits the bottom of the oil pan and see how far the oil comes up on it. sorry that's the best i can come up with.
