Coolant fan switches...

One mod I haven't done yet is lowering the fan turn-on temperature. I don't want to do the mods described in the tech section, because one of the switches is actually busted and leaking a little--I have to replace the switch. I figure I might as well replace both of them while I'm at it. The Hypertech switches look great, except for the price. So I was wondering, are there any less expensive switches out there? Maybe stock switches for other cars that would fit into a 350?

Thanks,
Jon88GTA

The fan switch for a 1987 Buick Regal VIN 7 brings the on temp down to 203degF, over 20deg cooler than your stock switch if I recall correctly.

Look on wrenchead.com or carparts.com for that application in a Borg Warner or Delco part and you'll be in good shape. Avoid the no-name stuff.

I'm using one for a '93 GMC Suburban (350 TBI). It closes at 225*, which is alot better than the stock 243*. The connector for the 'burban switch is different, so some adaptation will be required.

On temp is 203, off temp is ~190. In my application the switch only manages the aux fan, the ECM manages the primary fan.

I swapped one into my L98, no modifications necessary. Even plugged into the factory harness. Direct swap.

Do you know of any lower temp switches, say around 190/180 on 180/170 off? I can't see spending $50 with S/H to get a Hypercrap switch again. The one I had went out after a few weeks. And it aint the driest thing to install eighter. And what is the part number to the GM 170 degree stat?

The 170-degree 'stat is AC Delco part number 10220957. You can order it from any GM dealership.

MSI,

Autometer offers a fixed temperature switch that closes at 203°F and reopens at 187°F, part number 3246. I paid $20.99 for each of mine at the local speed shop. They might even be cheaper on-line or at an auto parts grocery store. They have a 1/2" NPT thread and no invasive sensing element to impede coolant flow. They're soo non-invasive that I was able to install an auxilliary switch on my '86 by drilling/tapping the water outlet without restricting flow from the thermostat. They should fit nicely in the right head opening.

I just picked one up at the parts store for a late 80's mopar. It has a 1/2-14 NPT thread (fits into extra heater outlet on edelbrock intake). The fan goes on at 195-200, off at 180 (or so). It has 2 male spade terminals. i soldered "pigtails" to them and then epoxyied the pigtails in. It came oput excellent. I paid about $10 for the switch.

Is that only for dual fan cars or will it work on single fan cars too?

I am friendly with the guys at NAPA and they let me look through the books. It is a 1980's mopar. It is a 1/2-14NPT thread size with 2 spade terminals. They had 2 different ones listed with different temp ranges, but all were much lower than the GM ones i saw. I can stop down there this week and check if you cant find one. BTW, the discount parts stores (around here at least) dont have the books with pics and specs.
