big big problem, need help fast

I do not know where to start, how about the details of the car.. 1989 firebird, 305 tbi 5 speed manual, accel ign. 99% stock thus far.

My buddy comes over tonight as i am leaving with a real sad look on his face, his baby is in bad shape, heres what is happening.

starts fine, all gauges are normal, no check engine light, no codes, while driving along, as soon as it hits 2000rpm, it starts to back fire and almost die, in nuetral it will rev not to bad, but still back fire, but if you are driving and try to change gears, it will chug and backfire badly. timing is good, distributer tight. good fuel delivery. shifts good, but cant shift very well with this problem, It started all of the sudden while he was coming off of the highway on a down shift.

I have thought of the obvious, thought of timing chain jumping teeth, tbi unit, ??????????????????

i am totally out of ideas here.

any one who can please help.

greatly appreciated

How about the ACCEL unit? Have you bypassed it and went back to the stock ignition to make sure the ACCEL unit wasn't bad? I've heard of several people having problems with those units.

How high of rpm did he go when he downshifted? Could have messed up several things if it over revved...such as the timing chaing but that would usually break if anything. Check all plug wires and coil wires to be sure they are all on and not broken?
