too mild in my opinion for a 383. You got gear?

How about this with 1.6 rockers? http://www.compcams.com/speccard/08-417-8.txt

jcb is right, too mild. That would be about right for a 350 with your mods but is not enough for the longer stroke. You need one step more. The cam he suggested would run great especially on top end but would be relatively difficult to tune in a FI apllication due to the 110° LS. You might want to consider the "305" grind that is the next bigger brother to that "304". Run 1.6 rockers no matter what, because of the larger displacement of the motor.

The ones he suggested are 112 and 114 duration aren't they? Thanks for the tips though.....I would love the bigger cam so long as I can stay emissions legal in NJ.

My bad... I read too fast, got my #s crossed, and somehow missed the second one in jcb's post, which is the same one I'm talking about!! Doh...

IMHO that would be the one for the rest of your combo.

PR,

You could also look into the Comp Cams 07-306-8. This profile is designed for the LT1-family of engines, but can be installed in a Gen I SBC with the customary dowel pin modification.

The cam still incorporates a distributor gear (for the oil pump drive on an LT1) and has better lift duration numbers for yout long-stoke engine. The 112° LAS and longer duration will make overlap reach a point of significant idle rumble and will likely require a custom PROM in your application.

As with most of the decent grinds, this one is not certified 50-state legal. A good hot engine and cats at the sniffer station may take care of some of that, but it's a fight that many of us face annually.

Incidentally, none of the grinds mentioned in this thread to this point have a CARB/CAFE certification number. Haven't those penii in Sacamento fallen off yet?

I'm planning on running a custom anyway. As far as emissions testing, NJ has the new dyno test which is going to make it hard for me to pass so I'm trying my best to keep it legal. If it's borderline I used to work in a shop that had a dyno and I know some other not so honest people.

we have had emisisons testing in CT for years. If i were you, Id go with about 1/8 tank and add 2 cans of dry gas. The alcohol burns really clean. I learned this from a friend with a F**d who registerd 0.0 HC and 0% CO with no smog equipment on the car!
