305/350 TPI
305/350 TPI
Has the TPI been made in a 350 or only in a 305 ?
I'm on to buy a (I hope '87 or 88 Camaro Conv.)in black. maybe a Z-28.
What would I be looking for ? Is there something that I shall be aware of ?

To make sure it ORIGINALLY had a 350, check for the number 8 in the 8th digit of the VIN#. An "F" denotes a 305 TPI. Also, you can look at the SPID sticker on either the top of lid of the console (on early models) or top of the lid on the locking box in the rear for these codes: B2L and L98.... that denotes the L98 with the iron heads.
But as for the condition of the engine, pay special attention to whether the car gives a puff of blue smoke when the car is first started... that usually indicates a valve seal problem. And have someone follow you to see how much smoke comes out when you are driving. A constant blue smoke coming out the exhaust shows worn rings. Lastly, they NEVER made a 5 speed with a 350. 5 speeds only came with the 305. All 350s came with the 4speed auto. But 305 TPIs also could come with the 4 speed auto.
Also, if the car has T-tops, be careful of leaking. Soak the car REALLY good with a hose if it has T-tops to check for leaks. And, lastly, if isn't a bad idea to have the car checked out professionally by a GM dealership. I'd rather waste $100 on a thorough check-up by a GM dealership on a used car, than end up buying a lemon.
