Scan tools ????

I am about to buy a new scan tool. Any suggestions on a brand? I have an OTC monitor 4000E, but it has been locking up, and OTC wants $575 for a software upgrade . I just want a good, user friendly version that is not terribly expensive, if there is such a thing. Anybody use an Actron?

Why not get the diacom setup for 200 listed in the classifieds section ? it's an awesome tool... one of the best!

That would work, but I forgot to mention that I would like OBDII capabilities, without having to spend another grand. Any other ideas?

I have a autoxray scanner it cost $175 through summit. It does everything the others do.Why mine was so cheap is because its for gm only w/ gm cable.Thas fine for me because all my cars are obd 1.It can be upgraded to obd2 for around 200 w/obd 2 cable I think. From what I understand is they are working on a cable to connect to a pc and download programs for crysler, ford and obd 2 from the net. They do have a web site, let me know what you think!

yea 'formula5' the software works good for me. It hooks to a serial port, and you need to install the flash memory. This will give you an extra option under data - (4-PC Link).
I went stupid and got the pro pak. It's all in one case. (OBD I, OBD II, Ford, Crysler, even the special cable for 94-95 OBD I/OBD II Camaro's/Firebird's/Corvette's.)
I was going to get a Actron, but the upgrades where a bit pricey, and there wasn't any support for my 94 Vette.
I like that it was bi-direction, and hoping Auto-Xray will impliement this someday. The good thing is the Easylink Auto-Xrays have a flashable memory with the PC-Link.
Believe me, If I had a lap top, I would get the diacom software and cables. My Pro-Pak cost me a whole 300 bucks.

Good Luck,

I believe that Diacom can be upgraded to handle up to 1997 cars IIRC. I last checked a year ago and the cost wasn't too much, , around $150-175.

This is to ALL legitimatly registered software owners. I use Diacom+ (a few extra features) and I am VERY happy with it as a reasonably priced scan tool.

It works in DOS mode on your computer, so any 286 Notebook (going for peanuts, if not given away) can be used to run it. Then you can transfer data file it creates to a copy of Diacom running on your home system for extracting files into a DBase or Excel program.

When you graph the selected information, it can often show some interesting info. I use a DC-AC power inverter plugged into my cigaretter lighter, so I can run my Notebook for extended drives for capturing information.
