Gear question....
Gear question....
to those who know the V6's...
what would be the best and highest gears to put in my '88 camaro.
3.42 automatic open diff.
that's the stock gearing.
gas mileage doesn't matter, as the mileage kicks *** already..
4.10 seems to be the word around here, but what about 4.56's?
remember peak hp is @ 4900 and peak torque is @ 3900.
quite a bit higher than the TPI's. and it seems that the TPI boys don't go over 3.73's
so i'm thinking the higher gears would help a 2.8 get up and go...
help me decide guys and gals....

it depends on what kind of gas mileage you want. 4.10's dont sound bad for a v6, but you have to think about it that you dont want to run out of gear at the line. I thinks 4.56's are way too big especially if its a daily driver.
just my 2 cents
just my 2 cents
well mileage doesn't matter.
I figured the 4.56's wouldn't be too much
considering the redline is 6000 RPM and as i said peak torque is only 160 @ 4900 and the ponies are 135 @ 3900.
that's a lie from GM though, they have to make more power than they are rated @, either that, or my car was a midweek car.
it's quick for a 6, and brake torquing it with the 3200 TC and shift kit, makes it launch real hard and quick, but otherwise it's slow, so I'd like to @ least believe it's faster. besides w/ 275/60's on the back, it's hard to spin 'em anyway. I don't know. they peak #'s are high enough, that it really wouldn't be winding out of power anyway.

i put 4.10 in my s10 with a 2.8 to make it ok to drive until the 383 is in. with 205/70r15's on it the engine revs quick and smooth. since you have found having way too much tire to be your advantage, maybe the 4.56 is your key. i've done best 60' of 2.34 with the over 200k 2.8, those tires, and 2800 stall.
