need to know what rear end i have

today when i took my car into the muffler shop the mech. put the car on the lift and when it was lifted up u could clearly see "84" in yellow marker on teh rear end. as we looked closer i noticed a tag connected to one of the diff. bolts. now i am thinking this is a tag for a posi rear end. or should i say the tag that tells me to put that special lube it the rear end. anyways i counted the botls and there are 10 of them. assuming that its a 1984 rear end how do i know what gears come in the car and what other if any special oddities the rear end has.. thanks in advance.

Take off the 10 bolts when the car is jacked up. (it's easy..they're supposed to be a little loose).

Take a look at the differential. Does it have spacers and 2 springs in it? If it does then it's posi...

If you want to find out the gearing..look for two numbers with a colon in between.

Example : 11:41 was on my car

41 divided by 11 is 3.727. Rounded to 3:73!

Just look for any two numbers separated by a colon and divide like I did.

If you don't want to pull the cover off.
Put it in park and raise the car up. Try to spin the wheel. If it spins easy and the other wheel spins the opposite way, you have an open rear end. If it won't spin, you have limited slip.
To check the gear ratio with limited slip:
Put the car in neutral and raise it up. Turn the wheel exactly one turn and count how many times the drive shaft turns. About 3 turns is 3.08. A little less than 3.5 turns is 3.42. Etc.
To check an open rear you can use the above method if you make sure both wheels turn exactly one turn the same direction. Or, you can hold one wheel steady and turn the other 2 turns and count the turns at the driveshaft.

I also believe that I've heard if only one wheel will spin forward, then the driveshaft will spin twice as fast. So you wouldn't really have a 6:1 ratio, it'd be a 3:1.

Pulling the cover's the best way tho, and if you have rear discs, there's a good chance you've got the 3.73's!
