3.23 or3.42?

I've seen post that say that there is not a big difference between the 2. But there is huge diff from my 2.** what ever. The 3.23 keep a better gas on the road?

either would work. if you have OD trans your milage shouldn't be hurt too much. i go with what ever i could find first (unless you're buying new gears). i think i'd go with the lower gears if it were me.

Go to one of those gear ratio/mph calculator sites and see what rpm your car will be turning at different mph in each of the gears and get the ratio that will best suit your driving. A 3.42 or a 3.23 will be a big increase over the 2.73 gears you have now. The 3.23 will be better if you do a lot of open highway traveling such as on the interstate but the 3.42 gears will be better for around town, drag strips ect. I have 3.42 gears but that's b/c I have a 5-speed with a 0.63 5th gear ratio and you have a 0.70 OD gear ratio so naturally you will turn higher rpms than I do with the 3.42 gears. If I was you while your doing the swap have a posi traction unit installed at the same time and it will help your traction out a lot but be careful in the rain! Your 91 should have the 28 spline axles so you can buy one of the Zexel Torsion take off units from SLP for $99 and it will bolt right in! We bought one and it looks to be in excellent condition, almost looks like they took it out of the 4th gen f-body before it was sold to the dealer. They are strong units and brand new they are $399. The Auburn posi-units are $320.

Another thing to watch out for is your rear-end housing normally won't accept anything over a 3.08 gear but Richmond makes gears now they specifically say they are for the 3.08 and lower rear-end housings that are 3.08 and higher in number. In other words if you got the 3.23 or 3.42 gears from another stock GM rear-end they will NOT work in your housing.

I bought a rear-end with a 3.42 gear in it already and then put the Auburn posi-unit in b/c at the time Richmond wasn't making the 3.42 gears for the lower rear-end housings.
