New Guy here needs a little help
Alright i have a stock 1984 Firebird 305. When i start the car in the morning it idles at 1800-1900 RPM but it doesn't lower it idles that way until i turn the car off maybe hours later and then it chokes for 4-5 seconds. When i turn the car back on it idles at 800-900 rpm but when i hit the gas it drops to about 400-500 and the check engine light comes on. Whats going on? someone said it was the oxygen sensor and that i should get a holley carb and get rid of all the electric stuff. Can i just replace the oxygen sensor?? or should i put the money on a new carb? if so what type electric or manual choke??
Thankx

Welcome in, FBird.
The oxygen sensor has little to do with the idle RPM, especially when teh engine is first started. Your high idle cam on the carb may be sticking or in need of some adjustment. If you think you have problems now running a carb on the street, switch to a Holley and see what you get. Instead of switching, just repair what you have. There reall isn't much to a Rochester and they are quite reliable.

maybe the choke? also, thats an old carb, im sure it needs to just be cleaned up a good lil bit. is your throttle linkage stocking?? spray that sucker down with carb cleaner a couple times, see if anything is sticking, go from there.

check for vacume leaks, sometimes that wont let it idle low, i had the same problem on my truck, took off all the vacume stuff and now she idles fine.
Ok i sprayed down the carb with carb cleaner and its doing the same thing. Is it something i can replace that will fix this or what?? maybe whatever operated the choke isn't working properly can i replace this???
