L98 Timing question

Yes, I am a moron, this is understood. Just to be sure, so that when my friend and I go to do it, we dont get any surprises. How do you check/change the timing on on my car (1989 L98 IROCZ)??

The reason why I post and ask is because the last time I tried to do something on my car, that I should have been able to do (i.e. thermostat) I couldn't do it, cause I couldnt get to one of the bolts.

Any info is nice, thanks.

To check the timing, you must disconnect the EST by-pass wire that controls the eletronics for the spark. It is a brown and tan wire that is on the harnesse that goess from the front of the engine to the rear (distributor and main harness) the passenger side. Look around and you should spot it fairly easily.

With the EST by-pass wire disconnected, then set your base timing to 6*BTDC on the "timing tab" on the front of engine and balance on your crank. I like to clean up the mark by either painting a "white line" in the mark or using chalk. Makes it easier to see when you check it with the light.

Follow the instruction on your timing light for connection. Should be quite simple.

As for the nut on the thermostat...look for a "dog legged wrench" similar to the one used for a distributor to loosen the nut. You can get one at a good tool department of most automotive and hardware stores.
