worn dist gear/ maybe causing carb backfire?

Ok guys, when I changed to carb, I bought a used hei dist. I put a new accel coil, cap and rotor on it. I did notice the gear was wore some. I question it, but some of the guys around at the time said it should be ok.

Now my car is backfiring through the carb, and the dist is not 180* out. It will run, but when I get on the throttle quickly it will pop and then pick up. The whole time I also have a dead mis.

The plugs are new, I have checked the wires which are fine, and the timing is between 36* & 38* total.

I think I have narrowed it down to the dist gear. Is it possible that it is causing the problem. The wear was very noticable on the gear.

What do you guys think?

Yep, possible. Having a lot of slop down there can cause weird timing problems and "spark scatter" (something not often talked about these days). Buy a new gear and see how it does. Popping off the old one is easy: remove distributor, use a drift or punch to drive out the spring-steel pin, slide the old one off the shaft and reinstall the new one. There is a "dot" on the gear that should point in the same direction as the rotor tip. Installing it backwards won't cause any real problems but you'll always be off by 1/2 a tooth (there are 13 teeth on the gear, which, obviously, doesn't divide evenly by 2).

Hopefully you haven't roached the cam gear by running a worn out ditributor gear against it for this long.

Yeah, I think that the gear might be my problem. I dont think I lined up the dot on it either. The dist had a bronze gear on it and the guy put the original GM back on when I bought it. He had it upside down. lol. I turned it up the right way and put a good pin in it. I might have put it on backwards. The teeth were getting pretty thin.

topguy, I found that out also. I am going to wire in a toggle switch for the pump. I might find a better 12v source also. For now, I just leave it off untill I need to start it. (not a daily driver)

Maybe the gear will correct the problem and I can get my car to the track and get some times. I have 2.73 gears in now and may get some times with them and then change to 3.73 and compare et's.

I got to thinking, are your running mallory 3-port regulator?

If so, the fuel should just go back to the tank through the bypass side when the key is on. You will still have fuel to the carb, but after the bowls are full, it should bypass. It shouldnt still be running into the carb, like overflow. I have not notice a problem with it so far.
