What's the difference between OD & D??

What's the difference between OD & D??
When is the right time to use DRIVE and OVERDRIVE? And whats the difference between the two?

OD is over-drive. Good for when you are on the freeway or when you want good gas mileage. D is just drive or 3rd gear, so if you were on the freeway or just cruising along your RPMs will be higher using more gas and adding more wear but the car will be accelerate quicker than if it was in OD. The gearing is different in OD than in D. IE, OD would be like my 2:73 rear gears while D would be like 3:42s
