trying to improve torque, non 3rd gen
Hey everyone, I have a 1995 Chev ext cab truck with the 350 and 5 speed trans, Im trying to improve torque for towing but keep all the TBI stuff on it, I was thinking of a Vortech head swap but it seems I need a different intake?? Im currently in the planning stage right now. It is all bone stock right now.

More torque for towing? OK.
I would use Vortec heads (12558060) and Vortec-TBI intake (12496821).
To keep it emissons legal, you'll need a way to route exhaust gas to the intake manifold. See following note:
"Technical Note: To use EGR, the gasses must be plumbed from the exhaust manifold into the intake manifold. Many exhaust manifolds have drilled and tapped holes that can be used to fabricate a tube. An example is the 1996 and later pickup truck with RPOL31 350 engine, which uses exhaust manifold P/N 12557828, EGR pipe P/N 10220275, and fitting P/N 12552329. That combination will fit this manifold for late model pickup trucks. Vacuum controlled EGR valve P/N 17113457 and gasket P/N 12337972 can be used on some models."
I solved this problem by purchasing headers with AIR tubes and instead of injecting air into one, I draw ehaust gas from it and route it into the intake manifold, so I can stay emissions legal.
Further, I would contact Comp Cams camhelp@compcams.com and tell them your application and ask them to recommend a cam for you. I could expand here, but take it from the people that deal with this stuff everyday and then make your own choice.
On the vortec heads, if going for more than ~0.430 lift, you'll need new springs (Comp Cams 981-16).
I did this on my 91 RS TBI Camaro with decent results.

good post swerve-driver...however, you could just buy the edelbrock tpi replacement unit and gain a little help in the towing.

That is a nice setup- just depends on what a person is willing to spend I guess. I've been pretty impressed with the power that comes from the vortec heads and, having suffered with the stock LO3 heads, would try to ditch them at first chance. I imagine monte-ss has the LO5s on his rig, but I'm betting they're not all that much better than the LO3s.

thanks guys, yeah I guess I left the part out of what I was wanting to do, Im just looking for ideas to increase mainly towing on the truck yes it is the bone stock LO5 K engine code, I dont want to make it some outrageous hotrod just a good driver gets decent fuel economy and can easily trailer my monte.
thanks

A good way to increase torque is to turbocharge the engine. As a turbo uses the exhaust gasses, it would also help with the emmisions. A little expensive though!
