how do I remove the dang rotor????
how do I remove the dang rotor????
car-92 Firebird with the 3.1L engine. Replacing cap and rotor, or at least attempting to. Dang rotor feels like its welded to the dist shaft. I remember having the same problem on the same type of dist on my 91 Sonoma. Tried prying it off with a screwdriver, ended up breaking the reluctor ring and had to buy a whole dist to get that one part
I would prefer not to break anything but the rotor this time around. How do I get this thing off?

If it's anything like my 3.1, it should just pull right off. If it's been on there for a while, it may take some tugging to get it to come loose. Try tapping it lightly with a rubber mallet, and keep pulling on it firmly, but not too rough. When you go to set the new one in place, be sure it goes all the way down on the shaft, or else you can and will end up with a chewed distributor cap. Good luck.

I don't know why they get so attached to the distributor so I now use a film of silicone grease on the top of the distributor shaft.
