oil gauge problem

For about the past 3 weeks now, I've noticed my oil indicator on the dash has been going a little crazy when I'm driving. It will shoot all the way past 60 and then drop down to zero a lot while I drive or even when I'm stopping. And when I'm just cruising it will teeter back and forth between 20 and 50. There is a small oil leak on my car and I'm still trying to figure out where, but its a very small drip maybe like a quart every month or so. Could this be a problem with my oil pump? I just replaced my oil gauge (dunno what it's actually called but it measures your oil) about 5 months ago and now the indicator seems to be acting all funky. I just got an oil change about 2 weeks ago and it stopped doing this for about a week, then started up again. I've had no major work done to the car recently and i'm kinda stuck as to where I should start. Any ideas? Thanks.

I'd start by checking the oil pressure transducer and wiring to it.

I had the same with my 89 formula, only my oil pressure would sit at 0. Before u go and do any major work to it, change the oil sender, its located right about the oil filter on ur car. the part costs about $20. If u do change it, just be carefull not to bend any of the prongs on the wire.

ok, well apparently it's been bothering me enough lately to take it to a friend of mine's shop where he has a lift. I notice I was about 2 or 3 quarts low which pulled into the very dangerous zone. We scrubbed the bottom by the oil pan and let it run for about 30 min. The result? Well, it's not the rear main seal like we thought from all the oil that used to be on there. We found a lot of oil on the back of the heads, so my best guess would be that I'm losing a head gasket. Instead of sending the heads to be machined again, I'm going to put in a 350 tbi for a very good deal. While I'm there, I might as well throw in my Saturday Night Special torque converter and shift kit so this engine will definitely get rid of the oil problem hehe.

sorry to hear but I hope your new engine brings a new need to feed a lil feed to your hog.

Let us know how the new engine comes along! Godspeed
