Code 36 and all the sudden bad perfromance(HELP)

Its me again. I bought a code reader and code 36 is the only code I get(besides 12). I do not have a cat. converter could that be the cause? Here is the real problem. I went out and floored it hit arount 60 and then it just sputters, like it can't go any faster. Two days ago I took it out and did not have this problem at all. Now when you floor it I get major hesitation. When I reach speeds of 60-70 and then floor it the tach drops to 500 and nothing happens. can any of you help. The goes along with the white puff of smoke at start up...Thankks guys!!

On a TPI engine, a '36' is for a failed MAF burn off cycle. For a TBI engine, a '36' doesn't exist. Presume by your siganture that the car is a 1988 model, you need to check into the MAF relays.

more info

Ok ....Its an 88 Iroc TPI 305(lb9) I am not famlilar with a MAF. I think it the piece conected to the throtle body and air intake. anyway if this is it, is the little coil inside supposed to turn red? How can I test this? Would this cause this horrible hesitation/boging? The wires conected to this have black tape on them. Anyway to replace? how much $$$?
You guys are the best!!

If you can see teh wire sensing element turning red (incandescent) inside the housing when teh ignition is ON, you probably have a bad MAF burn off relay. Try exchanging the relay:
