about ready to give up on this car

the car is a 86 iroc with a 350/5 speed engine specs are eledbrock 600cmf performer carb, edelbrock alunmiun intake, crane cam 216 intake/228 exhaust @.050,heads i'm not 100% sure but i beleave there 76cc 400 heads with 2.02/1.60 vavles (i'm posative about the vavle size) 1.5 roller tip rocker arms.bottom end is all stock.ignition Pertronix flamethrower distributor (1 week old) accel 300+ wires and splitfire plugs gaped at .40 both wires and plugs have about 3000 miles on them.exhaust edelbrock headers hi flow cat that was gutted (half of the inside melted on my rs so i just gutted the rest of it) borla adjustable cat back system.the enginehas about 6000 miles on it the rest of the car has about 106,000 miles on the clock

now here's the problems. 1) car acts like it's there is a little misfiring at idel maybe it's the cam being a little lobey but i thought a cam that mild shouldn't be like that.2)when in nutruel if i step on the gas the car will bog out if i don't let of the gas right away it will stall but if i can let off the gas before it dies the engine will race up to 2500 rpms.3)car backfires alot through the exhaust, sounds like a harley when i slow down but sometimes when i go to take off it will get bad backfire usally just one loud bang and some times there's a swoosh noise.4)when at cruise speeds you can feel the car cutting out like it's hitting a rev limiter or speed limiter the lower the rpm the more you can feel the jerking.5)doesn't feel like the power is there anymore when accelerating hard

some other info that might help.when i put a vaccum gage up to the carb it will bounce between 17 and 18 hg.also when i put the new dist. in i couldn't get it line up with number 1 in the cap it was either alittle berfore or alitte after tried to run it both ways and the one alittle after wouldn't run.I adjusted the vavles yesterday with it running turning them 3/8 after the chater stops and it seemed to run alittle worse.I've tried to adjust the timeing from anywhere 0*to 12* with no effect

I will be doing a leak down test next weekend (i hope i have the time) is there any thing else i should be checking

thanks in advance
Matt

from what you described i'm thinking it has something to do with the carb, mine did weird stuff like that and i replaced it and it was fine, but you should be able to align the cap with the rotor pointing to #1, i would focus on getting that ligned up first

always have to run this by people you sure you have a 5 speed and a 350 because they never came from the factory like that.

When you turn the distributor after it's installed your are turning the cap itself independently of the rotor. No matter how the rotor lines up, as long as it is close, you can turn the distributor to line up with the rotor. That's how you got it to be 0* while you where setting the timing. At 0* you are lined up like you describe you where trying to.

If your timing mark hasn't sliped on the balancer, then it should run fine as long as you are somewhere between 4 and 12*.

Are you 100% sure you have all the ports on the carb either plugged or going to somehting that needs vacuum? Also is the base of the carb flush on the manifold?

one more thing...have you checked and rechecked the firing order? backfiring thru the carb and misfiring sound like 2 of the wires are switched or the timing is waaay off, either that or your running too lean, check the float level and the jet sizes (metering rods too on the edelbrock), the bogging sounds like a lean condition unless theres a lot of black smoke then it is too rich instead of lean.
