Hey everyone. I got in a accident, and a small hole was poked into my exhaust pipe!

Problem is, is the hole is a few inches under the exhaust manifold, and no bolt-on muffler kit that i know of comes with tubes which go from the catalitic converter to the manifold! All of the kits i have seen just go from the cat to the muffler and out!

Does GM sell the peice of pipe that goes from the cat to the manifold?

Just wondering if anyone knew where i could get the exhaust tubing, either GM or aftermarket

 

if its simply strait pipe, go down to your local pep boys or advanced auto parts, they have a pretty good variety of pipes to choose from.

 

I would just weld the hole, it would be faster, cheaper and will avoid some potential headaches.

 

I bought that Y-pipe from AP. Any "real" parts store will have it... you know, the kind you can bring a lit cigarette or open can of beer into! The previous owner looked like he either hopped a curb and landed the car on the y-pipe, or he tried jacking the car up by it- it was almost crimped shut. That pipe ran me $130.

thanks for the suggestion, im gonna kick it over to pepboys on lunchbreak here, and check it out. I just wonder, if it will cost around 180.00 for the y-pipe, plus installation (hey, i wasn't into cars at ALL untill i got my IROC, i have no clue on how to work on them, yes yes, laugh if you want...) then why don't i just spend 180.00 on a set of headers, which incude a y-pipe? Ahh, there is always muffler tape for now, hopefully that stuff holds to the y-pipe, i bet that monkey is hot while im running.

 

That would be a real parts store, not Pep Boys or Kragen or Auto Zone... somebody that specializes in "hard parts", you know, the kind that are "hard to look up"... I can't imagine any of the retail chains for DIYers having parts like that.

Well where is the hole, on a straight piece of pipe or on a curve? For $10 I got a Dynomax stainless steel wraparound exhaust clamp from Summit. It was about 3 inches wide. I had intended to use it to clamp on my new cat, but wound up not. I noticed a small (1/2 inch diameter) rust hole in my pipe just after the muffler, so I just pulled out the clamp and clamped it over the hole. Hard to beat the price and it won't ever rust or burn through.

Cool. I saw something similar to that at pepboys today but it was only 2-1/4. not 3".

I ended up buying one of thoes white tape-mixed with glue "muffler tape fix" kits.

Man, pain in the *** to do all this without a jack! my head was lovingly ramming into the passenger wheel, and i had my arms bent so weird, i could only use a few fingers to manipulate the tape around the hole.

Ahh! the fun of working on cars! haha

But really, It said to let the car idle for 10 mins (which is about what i had time to give) to let the tape "set". If this stuff works, then ill make a post about it. It is super close to where the Y pipes meet from the manifold. Lots of pressure, Lots of heat for it to deal with, but i got enough tape to go over the hole around 6-7 times. Good deal. On the idle, it sounded quite a bit better. Not that im fooled into thinking it fixed it. i bet on the way home today, ill blow a hole right through the tape! haha.

Have to say, its cool working for a boss who will let you park your IROC-Z in the warehouse garage behind the office, and work on it during office hours!

Well, Wish me luck! i need this to last for at least a month, so i can get some headers, new y-pipe, and perhaps, a new freeflow cat+exhaust system.

Bort, good point. I'd just go to a shop and have it welded. Unless you want to spend some serious cash and get a completely new exhaust system.

I figured someone would ask that question, how i poked a hole in my exhaust.

Well, It involved me, a curb, a street sign, and a huge light. in that order.

I ended up really bending the frame of my IROC totally far back (the front passenger wheel was puched back so far from the bending, that it rubbed the back of the wheelwell!)

Haha, all of this happened the day after i moved to california.

Luckily, i have some awesome friends, who lent me alot of money, so i could get the frame fixed. It was painfully expensive, and none of my friends felt it was worth it. But hey, this car is my baby, i shipped it all the way from hilo, Hawaii, to Dallis texas. (then drove to denver, and then, California)

So anyway, when i bent the frame, there was some huge bolt that was protruding by the Y-pipe, and it was rammed into the pipe, to create a huge crater. After the frame was pulled, and fixed, it left a gaping hole.

Oh well, ill eventually get it fixed. i hurt as much as my car hurts untill.

 

hey cool i work in a REAL parts store...i smoke cigs while i help customers and they cough but oh well...actually my store is halfway real/commercialized. we have 11 stores in nj but thats all...its hard to find people who know what the hell they are doing (as in "hard to look up" parts) Ive worked there 4 years and only have been at the parts counter for about 1 year...i did inventory/registers for a while but man did i learn a whole lot about cars. anyway, i agree about the whole pep boys/autozone things...they may carry a lot of accesories, but ask them for the donut that couples your steering shaft or the pitman arm seal on the steering gear and they'll probably go "huh?"
