Leak near rear of the car!!
Leak near rear of the car!!
ok guys I have a 1988 Iroc Z28(lb9). I have what appears to be an oil leak at the rear of the car. The leak is coming from .....back end of car at rear tires, centered between the back two wheels under the car. the liquid is oily, dark in color(black) and stinks. Any idea what is leaking an where from? Could this have anything to do with my other post(Puff Of smoke at start up)?
You guys have been a great help
Thanks.
P.S I am slowly learning the ropes and apprecaite all the help.

That would be the differential housing. Most probable area is either the cover is leaking, or the pinion seal. If you don't have the ability to raise the car, then have it put on a rack and see which is leaking.
It has no relation to your puff of smoke at startup, that's most likely the valve stem seals.

It stinks because gear lube has an extreme pressure (EP) additive in it that's sulfur-based.
It's black because it needs to be changed. If you're lucky, it's leaking from the cover gasket, which will be taken care of when you change the gear lube (may also be silicone sealer instead of gasket).
Since it's black and needs to be changed, you probably won't be lucky.
