undiagnosed ticking
I have this ticking noise that really bothers me coming from the heads on my motor. It all started with the original 305 and when I tightened down the rockers (while running) it would quit for a few seconds, so I assumed a collapsed lifter. I changed the motor to a 350 with new crank, pistons, cam, lifters, etc. etc. The only thing I left the same was the heads, but they accidentally got switched from side to side and it so happens that the ticking noise followed along. My only guess is that a valve is "ticking" and when I tighten it and it goes away the only thing I am doing is over tightening a lifter (hydrualic). Do valves tick? Does this seem like a resonable answer? Any other ideas? Thanks for any help or opions.

If you tighten them to much you risk shattering a rod, there are methods of doing it correctly and yes valves do tick.
Lifters and most of the valve train can tick if uncorrectly worked on. Do a more through search but this seems like a good thread u SHOULD read.

My guess is you have a stud pulling out. Happened to me, same symptom. Believe it or not, the rocker studs are actually pressed in and will just come right out. The problem even came back tonight and I have to deal with it again. Do yourself a favor and put something flat over the tops of the studs on that side and see if they're level. Even if this turns out to not be the problem, save yourself the worry and put threads in the head and get some threaded studs. They'll never come out. It can be done on-engine, I think Vader made a PDF guide to it, its not that hard.
Another note: When it first started happening to me, I pulled off the valve cover and I would have sworn the nut backed off a 1/2 inch!! It was THAT loose on the pushrod! Scary stuff, man. One twist of the rocker arm and I would have had a pushrod through the hood. Fix or prevent this NOW.
