ecm computer question
ecm computer question
will an ecm computer from an 1986 transam with an lg4 motor. work on an 87 camaro z28 with the same motor. IN the 87 the engine service light reads 51 epprom error. when i put the ecm from an 86 ta reset the light the engine service light goes out. Does this mean the ecm will work or will it just fail again. thanks wes

Blue,
The two ECM units should be the same part number, so it should work correctly. The error code you are reporting is supposed to indicate a failed PROM module, not necesarily an ECM problem.
It is important that you use the PROM module originally designed for the car, even though the PROM from the '86 may be similar. Open the rectangular cover on the side of the ECM housing and swap PROM modules to verify the problem. If the error message still occurs with the original PROM installed in the donor ECM, the PROM should be replaced (about $50.00 at the dealer). If the problem has gone away, you either have a failing original ECM or the PROM module connections were failing. You could try removing and re-seating the PROM module in the original ECM to test that last theory.
Of course, all ECM work should be done with the battery disconnected.
