stolen 1988 IROC (update)
stolen 1988 IROC (update)
Well, my car was recovered by the police. It was used in a felony (robbing and stabbing two girls at an ATM) so they held onto it for a few days. The gentlemen who were driving it also stabbed a few holes in the leather seats, pulled part of the headliner down, and generally made a mess of the interior, but they didn't crash it. When they realized the cops were getting close, they just abandoned it and stole someone else's car.
It's been in the shop for almost two weeks now waiting for a new steering column, but I'm supposed to be able to pick it up tomorrow morning. I'm looking forward to having it back, but I'm hoping it didn't sustain any hidden damage from the abuse it took from those clowns. Now I have to look into an alternative to the Club, which obviously didn't slow them down at all.
anyway, thanks for all the good wishes! I guess they worked, cause I really didn't expect to ever see it again-

Get a brake lock
It will take a kid 10 seconds to cut through your steering wheel and remove the Club. Get the version of the club that locks the brake pedal. It is extremely difficult to remove when installed properly and impossible to drive with it on.
Ever thought about grants quick release steering wheel kit? Just take the wheel off and unless they have a pair of plyers it isn't goin nowhere..................as grant says "NO WHEEL NO STEEL"

Take the 10 amp fuse out of the fuse box to disable the computer. Very easy to get to and very easy to pop back in. That way if someone breaks in the car they cannot get it started.

Better yet, invent yourself a shrinking machine. This way you can shrink your car down and carry it in your pocket everywhere you go. This is what I do!!!
Seriously, I am glad to hear that your car was recovered and repairable. I once had a motorcycle stolen and never heard from it again...I would cry if my Z was stolen...

You can drive a car all day with no brake pedal.
All you have to do is use the emergency brake handle to slow down and stop.
someone asked "how did they take it?":
as someone else suggested, they sawed through the wheel to get the club off, then broke into the column to hot wire it. The car didn't have a chip on the key, nor is there any wiring in the car related to such a chip, according to the mechanic who put a new column in yesterday.
only problem he missed: car is now pissing coolant into the passenger footwell due to a blown heater core. I'm gonna try to get insurance to cover this, cause it was fine before it was stolen. Maybe it overheated while the thieves were driving around-could this blow a weak core?

A working VATS system is way more effective. As a secondary measure, a starter interruptor or fuel pump kill switch is also an excellent idea.
Forget about alarms. No one pays attention to them any more, and they are more of a public nuisance than a security measure. People get citations and fines for having their alarms turn on indiscriminately.

I'd put a switch on one of two things (or both if you really wanna **** with em):
- Fuel pump (no gas, no boogie)
- Ignition Coil (no "bang", no boogie)

When it comes down to my 91, I never take it to places where I feel its unsafe, my 86, I lock the doors, and keep it in view. If I'm in a restraun or somewhere and I have the 91 out, I keep site of it, if im in the store or something, I dont leave it alone long. I keep a large folding knife on me, blood cleans easy off of leather. Approach me while im near the car, and unless you have a gun, you will have a tire iron buried in your head. Kill switches are a good idea too.

Second, it's a weenie litle 762 (.30 cal) round. In combat, they're only proven to annoy the opposition unless you get a really clean hit (which is probably why officers get larger sidearms). The problem is that the opposition will live long enough to return fire. They're only a little better than the .223/5.56 NATO round, and are great for raccoons and tin cans, though.
Third, by comparison, a BMG .50 with a 200 round tombstone drum is a real joy to operate. While not as fast at emptying the magazine as the "high tech" Russian POS, everything you get near, whether a clean hit or not, is going to sustain serious damage. Fairly often, a round will continue flight and damage more targets behind the initial target.
Finally, don't try to get around the board filters by altering spellings. We still have members of all ages and persuasions, and need to try to keep it clean.

For those who did a KITT conversion
You could have the tires deflate automatically when you park the car and reinflate each time to restart. Make the rims strong enough to support the weight of the car or ad in braces like NASCAR (I think it is NASCAR) uses to automatically jack up the car to prevent rim damage.

You could get a Grant steering wheel, they have one that you can remove with a button everytime you park.

you know what the easiest way to get in one of our cars is to get a clothes hanger and put it through the top of the window and hit the trunk button. I've lokced my keys in the car twice and it worked both times. Any prepared theif could get in easily.

as you pointed out, the Grant removable sterring wheel kit is an excellent product.
i am looking into buying one of these kits, and along with my very basic form of a ignition disabler switch, i hope to prevent scum from trying to remove my car from its designated area.

excellent point, Vader. car alarms are simply glorified noise makers and everyone just ignores them. when i hear them go off i just assume that someone set it off by accident or doesnt know how to use them.

true, but any alarm i would buy has a starter kill on it too. it serves it's purpose.

Do what I do... right behind the back seat, in open view, leave a flat-black painted Hockey stick with about 3/4 of the blade chopped off and the handle cut to about 3ft long.
Its actually my hood prop, but I've been told it looks REALLY intimidating

If this is true then why don't I see others jumping on this idea? Wouldn't it be easier than taking a whole steering wheel!?! I mean what thief would carry around a 10-amp fuse? Let alone know that it's missing and where it goes?

but instead of taking out a fuse (I'm sure if the thieves knew it MIGHT be a fuse, or they run into the missing fuse when looking for a kill switch or something.. that they could take a fuse out of another part of the fuse box (IE: another 10amp, or a 20/30 whatever amp that runs something that isn't required to drive)
So.. combine the two ideas... I'd say wire the ECM wire to a kill switch... BOOM. it'll act like it'll start.. but it won't. no fuses to carry. plus you would be tapping into a lower current (10 amps instead of 20 amps for the fuel pump, i believe) so there's less danger in there for people who were worried about finding a switch that wouldn't melt when connected to 20 amps..

I know our cars are easy to break into and are fairly easy to steal. When it comes down to it, a good car thief is going to get any car they want. Taking the ECM is fuse a simple deterent and I do it myself when I go away for a while or have to park somewhere undesirable. I don't honestly think a car thief that would steal a 3rd Gen is going to try to hot wire it or something and then diagnose a not start condition. Rather they would snake something like the stereo or your wallet if you leave it in there. The way I look at is that it would be a dangerous waste of time for a car thief to look at the fuses and relays to make sure they are all there.
Also if it does make you nervous to remove the fuse for fear a thief may notice it, take a blown fuse, amperage doesn't matter, and replace the ECM fuse with the blown one. Now there is no noticeable missing fuse...

In my line of work as a P.O. a thief is not going to waste his time if the car dosen't start. He is not going to try to figure out why it doesn't start. They want a car that starts up within x amount of sec after they break into it.
