Rear End Question

my buddy has a 89 with a 7.5" 10 bolt. any ways we tore it down after it has been howling for a long time. carrier bearing is shot and it has eatin up the carrier itself. my question is, how much does another carrier cost? it is just a open 3 series carrier with 3.42 gears wich are still ok by the way. i basically just need another carrier and was wondering what a good price is for a used one? thanks in advance!!!

You can get a whole rear at the buzzard for around $75. Just make sure it has the same axle spines as the one you're replacing. Count them before you buy anything, 89 was the changeover year and it could be either 26 or 28.

Same price as a whole rear..... they have to destroy a rear to sell you just the carrier, so you pay for the whole thing and you just are allowed to leave behind the scrap you don't want.

A clue though; if the old one has 26 spline axles, then any 7½" rear from 88 back with 3.23 or higher gears has a carrier that will fit. That includes Chevelle, Monte Carlo, Cutlass, etc; S trucks; and some full-size cars. If it's 28-spline axles, your choices are much narrower; S trucks is about all you're likely to find besides Camaros & Firebirds, although 4th gen carriers will work too.

there is a place called second hand speed in memphis and he will pretty much bargain with you. he usaully has a shelf of carriers , and that is why i was asking about a price so i dont get screwed just walkin in and not knowing what they are worth. btw, i forgot to mention it was a 89 astro van, if that makes a difference. thanks again man.
