84 L69 rebuild questions on vortec heads
Rebuilding my tired L69 Carb. I want to go with vortec heads. A freind gave me two L31? heads from his 97 pickup with only 9000 Km on them.
Just what do i need to us them . If some one has done this before please let me Know what dome to use and a cam to match!
Thanks in advance

Well, If they are The Vortech heads, You will need to Get the Edlbrock performer RPM manifold for Vortech, as the bolt patterns are Differnt.

I don't have the Vortecs, but have looked into it. If you bolt them on as-is, you're going to take a compression hit because they're 64cc. You can get them milled, but take your new Vortec manifold in at the same time to have it shaved to match. You could use domed pistons, but I haven't seen any listed for 305's - flat-tops are the best I've seen, which I believe your L69 already has.
If you're going with a bigger cam, watch the total lift. I forget the number, but they can't take a hefty amount without new springs.
If you didn't get the rockers, you'll need self-aligning pieces, which your L69 doesn't have.
They may also may not have the exhaust cross-over passage, so your EGR will not work. That can cause pinging problems if you don't redo your timing curve (there's another post on that somewhere on these boards).

heres the real deal, I run vortec with a C and not a CH (pet peave). I run .470 lift on the stock springs and also have a performer RPM. These heads are great, check the time and that was with just 2 runs. Just get them milled 45 thous and bolt on the performer RPm and your set. oh yeah, stock exhaust manifolds wont bolt up either, so you best get headers as they will work.
