Can stock ignition box work without the ECM?

I am converting to carb, can I use my stock ignition box? I know I need a different distributor, but summitt says I need a different ignition box. Tell me they are wrong? (I dont wanna fork out any more money)

What do you mean by "ignition box"? As in like an MSD, OEM has no such thing. But the computer controls advance timing. For that reason you need a vacuum advance distributor (any will do). Apart from the ECM, the coil, wires, spark plugs and of course the dist. are the only OEM ignition parts.

So an ignition box is not required??? I can run the car without an ignition box as long as I have a vacuum advance distributor? Sorry for my ignorance, the whole carb thing is new to me.

The computer controls the timing advance on a computer controlled HEI. When you remove the computer, you need to switch to a vacuum HEI. A MSD box just adds more juice to the spark a few degrees before, during, and after to satuarte the plug with sparking ability (make sense?).

There is no need for a MSD box and it will work with both computer controlled and vacuum HEIs.
