AIR Emission system on a '89 GTA
AIR Emission system on a '89 GTA
What impact, apart from increased emissions would result if the entire AIR
system was removed. I need to remove this to simplify the process of conversion from left-hand drive to right-hand and to provide more work space.
Also does anyone know of a extensive source of new/secondhand parts for 3rd
Gen. Trans Am's.
Many thanks, Paul.

You should not have any problems by removing it. I took my smog pump/AIR system off and have not had any problems or ECM codes. If you do remove your smog pump, a smog pump delete pulley is now available, and I mention it in the two links below. With the pulley installed in place of the smog pump you will be able to keep the stock serpantine belt and routing of it, instead of having to get a shorter belt and route it differently. As for parts sources, any of the sponsors of this site should be able to get you what you need. There is also Classic Industries and NextGen Parts, but most stuff they sell you can still get from the dealer and they are fairly expensive. Hope that helps.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that I have ordered the pulley but have not received it yet. When I do I will post my comments about it.

Don't forget to go in and remove the air injection extension tubes! They stick out in the exhaust stream. You'll have to remove the air manifold to get to them. I had to use a drill bit to reach them. The bit should be big enough so that when you turn it by hand, it will bite into the extension tube and then you can pull it out.
Then simply put the air manifold back on or buy some threaded plugs at the hardware store to fill in the holes.

blak92! : Some AIR systems will switch constantly while the car is hot or cold.
Other systems (vac. actuated ones) switch on decel or accelerate due to vac. signals changing.
It is a myth that cars, when warm, don't need AIR injection to pass smog. Trust me, I see them fail due to this reason all the time, and I don't test them cold. (see sig.
)
AIR injection helps the cat "lite off" when its cold.
It IS true that the AIR system does not put air in the Ex. manifold when in closed loop. It should go "downstream" to the cat, its still feeding the cat with air during a 2500 RPM smog exam.
As too the original question, It shouldn't hurt a thing to remove the AIR system.
