plug gap with msd and another ??

Ive had my msd set up on for a couple of months now, and Im finaly getting around to opening the spark plug gap up a little. I have the MSD GM blaster coil, msd 6a box and msd brass cap and rotor. Im planning on opening the plugs to .50 should I be ok with that?
I run a little rich when in the higher rpm range(3500-5000rpm I can smell the access gas) and Im hoping opening the plugs will help with that and help me get a little more than 200 miles to a tank of gas.

also a friend of mine helped me check my spark this evening. it was realy funny. he disconnected one plug wire and put a screw driver in it. then I fired the car up. as he was slowly lowering the screw driver to the body of the car he pulled his free hand over near the screw driver and the spark shot nearly a foot(12 inches) from the screw driver to his free hand. he couldnt open his hand from a balled up fist for about 5 min and he said he almost pissed his pants.
he said he's been bit by a spark testing this way b4 but is was never as painfull, he's never seen a spark shoot almost a foot, and he's never almost pissed his pants from being shocked.
would that be normal from a working msd setup?
when asked if it was more than one spark he said he didnt know and doesnt care to find out lol.

Yeah, .50 or .45 will work just fine with the strong spark the MSD boxes put out. You might even get a bit better mileage if it will more completely burn the rich mix it is getting. Would be nice, eh?

I think MSD recommended .40 for the gap with the MSD box. That was for a 72 Buick. I would try .45 and go from there.

Looks like you're carbed, why not fix the rich condition?

Smelling rich doesn't mean you are running rich. An O2 sensor on the exhaust is the only way to tell. Are you running an open element? Smoother idle and a bit better mileage is all you will probably see with a gap change. Doubt your smell will go away. Mine are 55 per Jacobs.

82camaro yea I have an open element.
here is a new ?? to go along with this. my MSD coil went out this morning. started right up, turned the car off went to restart and wouldnt, just sat there cranking. thank fully I still had the stock coil around to put back in and the car fired right up.
any way my coil is still under warranty so Im going to mail it to msd this weekend for repair/replacement. would it be ok to go ahead and regap my plugs with the stock coil in since the 6a box is still connected and working? or would it be better to wait untill I have the msd coil back on.
